Kai Ming, Inc.
History Head Start was developed in 1965 to help break the cycle of poverty by providing perschool children of low income families a free comprehensive program to meet their emotional, social, health, nutritional, and educational needs. Head Start now serves over 900,000 children and families in all 50 states. Grants to operate Head Start programs are awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant covers 80% of operating costs with the remaining 20% coming from local community contributions.
Kai Ming was established in 1975 to serve the Chinatown and North Beach communities. currently we re contracted with San Francisco Head Start to provide servicesto 265 children and families throughout our six centers. Additional funds are received from the State of California to extend the hours at several of our centers. Our staff speak a number of languages including Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.
Mission Statement Kai Ming's mission is to offer valuable, reliable and comprehensive quality services for children and families at no cost. Through collaboration with parents we will: - Incorporate individual and cultural considerations into daily operations - Assess and address changing community trends by working in partnership with other local agencies - Seek opportunities to be engaged with current issues in research and public policies related to our community
Kai Ming understands that parents are the most important influence in their child's development. It is an essential part of our philopsphy to include parents in program planning, classroom activities, and parent education.
Parents serve as reresentatives of the Kai Ming Policy committee and the City-wide Policy Council where they participate in decisions related to San Francisco Head Start operations.
Service Areas Education - Kai Ming's curriculum is designed to meet each child's individual needs. Teachers are trained in early childhood education and provide a variety of learning experiences to foster cognitive, social, emotional and physical growth.
Health - Kai Ming assist for every child to receive a complete medical and dental exam. Nutrition education is offered to children and families. Mental health services guide children in their emotional and social developmet.
Social services - Kai Ming employs family and Community Services Coordinators at each site to provide referral services to assist families in identifying and meeting their needs.
Children with Special Needs - Kai Ming makes 10% of its toal enrollment available tochildren with special needs.
