January 27, 2012 was Kai Ming Head Start North Beach Center’s Family Literacy Day. A lot of parents came to our center and participated in this exciting and meaningful event, reading books, and interacting with children and teachers. Also, ING Bank staff representatives, CJ and Stephanie, joined the event and provided parents with a brief workshop on banking services. Also, ING Bank donated electronic money savings machines to our children!

At the reading time, CJ read the story “Brown Bear Brown Bear What do you see?” in English to our Full Day Class 1. Children were drawn by the pictures and story, and many of them even read out loud with CJ. Then, James Chen’s father, Boye read the book again in Cantonese. After the reading, children went back to the classroom and engaged in a hands on activity related to the story. They chose color http://www.phpaide.com/?langue=fr&id=16 paper, and cut out the shapes to make animals.

Three parents from Full Day Class 2 read another book “All About Water” in each of their home languages to the class. Athena, Nehemiah’s mother read it in English. Queenie, Manson’s mother read it in Chinese; and Narzli, Shawna’s mother read it in Farsi. Children were fascinated by the story lines and also the beauty of different languages. After the story the children continued to explore the topic of “water” through making lemonade with parents.
