History
Head Start was developed in
1965 to help break the cycle of poverty by providing preschool children of low
income families a comprehensive program to meet their emotional, social, health,
nutritional, and educational needs. Head Start now serves over 800,000 children
and families in all 50 states. Grants to operate Head Start programs are
awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant covers
80% of operating costs with the remaining 25% coming from community
contributions from the local community.
